Old School Tool

I love a kitchen gadget, especially one that doesn’t require electricity and can generate versatile and delicious kid-friendly parcels of goodness. Enter the old school waffle iron.
Equally at home on the barbecue, a campfire or on the stovetop, this is a solid addition to the back of the kitchen cupboard.

On this occasion, I’ve gone for the sweet variety. These can be batched and made up for the freezer, ready for a light toast when required.

Serve straight up with some golden syrup or icecream, or both!!

 

Step 1 - The Batter

  • Beat your eggs well then add the milk, melted butter and vanilla extract.

  • Add the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt and beat it until you have a thick batter.

  • Put your waffle iron over the hob and heat it up.

 

Step 2 - Cook your waffles

  • Once the waffle iron is nice and hot, open it up flat and pour in a single ladle across the middle. It will look like not enough but don’t be tempted to add too much otherwise it will spread out the side, be very messy and burn.

  • Close up the iron and cook for 2 minutes either side. It should be nice and browned.

  • Once done, the waffles should come out easily

  • Cut down the middle and serve with golden syrup. A scoop of ice cream works well too, or even both!

 

 Waffles

  • 2 eggs

  • 300ml milk

  • 100g melted butter

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 250g flour

  • 25g caster sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 3 tsp baking powder
